UNCUSTOMIZED
WORK – IMPACT ART PROJECTS – UNCUSTIOMIZED
Project “Uncustomized,” commissioned by Breda Photo, edition 2018 with the theme “To Infinity and Beyond.” I was asked about my vision for the future. My response was that everyone would look the same. Even children in the Netherlands now have the same perfect teeth, and cosmetic procedures are not only becoming more affordable but also more widely accepted, perhaps even glorified. “Uncustomized” aimed to create an archive of the untouched human, while it still possible.
During Breda Photo, I posed a question to visitors: “Imagine I would take you to a plastic surgeon, one from LA, who doesn’t ask you what YOU want to change but what the surgeon would adjust, what would be the first intervention?” With this question, I challenged visitors not to think from a personal perspective but rather from a general fashion image of how we should look. Usually, an immediate answer to the question was given. I then portrayed that specific aspect mentioned by the participant in macro, as natural beauty. Thus, during the festival, an exhibition of unique, imperfect landscapes grew. This was not only a way to capture a piece of heritage but also to discover its beauty and engage in a discussion with each other.
